Always Assume a Hurricane Will Hit You

Hurricane Irene-on-the-ProwlMIAMI – Aug. 23, 2011 – As of late morning, Hurricane Irene appears to be turning from the Florida coast and heading toward the Carolinas – though Atlantic coastal cities should still expect rough surf, blustery weather and possible tornados. But even if Irene avoids the Sunshine State altogether, Floridians should be generally prepared for hurricane season and specifically prepared for any named storm lurking off the coast. Just remember Andrew in 1992.

Preparation includes family and home first, but business records should also be preserved, either by using a cloud computing system that stores records in a non-hurricane state, or by backing up the information manually before power potentially goes out.

For more information, check the floridarealtors.org hurricane center.

Now's the Time to Batten Down Windows Article

The first hurricane of the season to threaten the U.S., Irene, passed over Puerto Rico Monday and could hit the U.S. anywhere from the Keys to the Carolinas later this week.

Forecasters can’t say for sure how strong the winds will be or exactly where Irene might land, but if you live along the southeast U.S. coast and you don’t have hurricane shutters, now’s the time to prepare your home’s windows for high winds.

Readers: Beware of Identity Theft

Identity theft is realGood afternoon, Lila Keim here.

Just a few days ago, I sat down and wrote about identity theft and the serious affects of the Epsilon data breach a few weeks ago. I shared a personal experience my husband, Bob, and I had only weeks prior to the data breech to show the realities of the topic.  You can read the post here.

The criminals responsible for the most recent episode are professionals and are known for mimicking banks, credit card companies, department stores and any other company to whom you have shared your personal information (i.e. email, phone number, etc). They are using the minimal information you provided to trick you into providing your social security number, passwords, credit card information and more.

It is our hope that anyone reading this post will take the topic of fraud seriously and be at least suspicious about any requests for your personal information.

Thank you.
